The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) PG is a mandatory exam to enter the desired Post-graduation field in medicine. Post-graduation courses involve MS (Mastery of Surgery), MD (Doctor of Medicine), and Diploma. 

NEET PG involves various specialized courses related to MS and MD. A few of these post-graduation streams are:

  • MD: Anatomy, anesthesia, dermatology, ENT, biochemistry, general surgery, forensic medicine, geriatrics, ophthalmology, orthopedics, OB-GYN, etc.
  • MS: Plastic surgery, ENT, OB-GYN, orthopedics, cardiology, plastic, cosmetic, etc.

Most reputed post-graduation courses in India for Medical Aspirants

Radiology:

Most aspirants who have scored the highest marks choose to become radiologists, as radiology is the topmost PG course currently available in India. 

Though the cutoff to get into PG courses differs every year, based on previous year analysis, the cutoff for the general category is the 50 percentile, i.e., 366 marks. That means your rank in NEET PG should be somewhere around 6,000. 

The role of a radiologist is to diagnose and plan treatments for patients. It is, therefore, a quite challenging and exciting field to choose. In radiology, you can specialize in either Radio-Diagnosis or Interventional Radiology.

Radio-Diagnosis (radiology) is used to diagnose various diseases like

  • Cardiovascular radiology
  • Mammogram (breast screening)

  • Neck and head radiology
  • Chest radiology
  • Neuroradiology

Interventional radiology is helpful to treat various disease states through procedures such as below:

General medicine

General medicine has been the most opted PG course by aspirants for many years. Still, there is no fluctuation in demand for MD general medicine doctors. Hence, it remains a leading option for PG, especially in India.

Obstetrics and Gynecology:

This medical stream solely deals with women’s problems, and there is a widespread belief that women would be free to share their issues with women. As a result, 90% of the time, female doctors choose OB-GYN for their PG. 

The NEET PG cut-off rank for OB-GYN in 2020 was 9154. Obstetrics is the study of pregnancy, labor, childbirth and its complications, and postpartum, while Gynecology deals with the uterus, vagina, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. So, an obstetrician-gynecologist would be expertise in all these categories. 

There are other specialization areas in the same field that you can opt for once you finish with OB-GYN. They are:

Dermatology

The skin is the largest organ of our body. It forms a protective barrier for organs from various diseases, warms our body, and protects the internal organs from environmental stress. So, a Dermatologist is a physician who specializes in skin, hair, and nails. 

Dermatologists can treat up to 3,000 skin conditions. As skin cancer affects numerous people in Australia and the USA, dermatology has got a lot of limelight throughout the world.

This field has immense opportunities, especially in sports orthopedics. Nowadays, sportspeople hire a special orthopedist for themselves to know about their overall bone health. In India, the rising rates of RTA (road traffic accidents) also raise demand for orthopedic surgeons. Moreover, fractures and total knee replacements have become the most common surgeries in India. 

Not only surgical procedures, but orthopedists also help people prevent diseases and maintain patients’ overall health. Cardiology:

India requires 88,000 cardiologists every few years, but there are only 4,000 of them. Consequently, cardiology is always in demand in India. 

The MS in cardiology is a 3-year degree. The NEET PG cut-off score in 2020 was 154. You can crack this if you get 50 percentiles in MBBS and get a decent rank in NEET PG.

Anatomy:

Anatomy is the branch of medical science where the candidates have to study the structure and arrangement of human bodies and all the systems, organs, and their functioning. They learn in detail about the positioning of organs, their tissue health, organs linking with one another, and how they function as a team. 

It is a two-year master’s degree course, where you can choose MS or MD in anatomy. There are 284 colleges in India where you can pursue your MD/MS in anatomy.

Forensic medicine:

It is the branch of medical science where aspirants will learn how to examine dead bodies to know the time, cause, and manner of death. This branch is instrumental in solving legal issues. Recently, this course has gained a lot of prominence in India, and also, a lot of government sector jobs are available for forensic specialists.
