It is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, an Indian freedom warrior, and the country’s first education minister. The Maulana Azad Medical College’s mission is to provide superior information and rigorous training that will prepare students to address the professional and scientific challenges of the twenty-first century. It is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, close to the Delhi Gate.
History of Maulana Azad Medical College
Maulana Azad Medical College dates back to 1936 when India was still ruled by the British. The British were significantly manning the Indian Medical Service at the time. Melvin Cruickshank was appointed Chief Medical Officer of New Delhi in 1940. He was given the task of building a medical college complex near Ramlila Maidan. But, in 1939, the Second World War broke out, and his ideas for a new medical institution were shelved.
MAMC began at the former Irwin Hospital in 1958. Govind Ballabh Pant laid the foundation stone for the college’s new buildings in October 1959 and the college was opened on February 26th, 1961.
MAMC has been a truly national medical college since its beginnings, attracting staff and students from all over the country.
The College campus occupies 122 acres of land with 23 departments. Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Community Medicine, Dermatology, STD and Leprosy, ENT, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, and many other departments are available at MAMC Delhi. It provides 25 courses in graduation, masters and Postgraduate diploma in various subjects.
Moreover, every day, 7,200 patients visit MAMC New Delhi. They also have 47 operating theatres and have a bed capacity of 2800.
290 undergraduate, 245 graduate, and super specialty students are overseen by 426 faculty members and 810 resident doctors at the medical institute.
The College is affiliated with the University of Delhi, ranked 17th in NIRF 2020.
Early pioneers with stellar professional careers who left jobs in established medical institutions to join a fledgling medical college aided the college much during its formative years. Their voices may still be heard in the college’s corridors, laboratories, and lecture rooms.
The medical institute is affiliated with four other institutions, as listed below:
