Sputnik V Vaccine is the Russian vaccine for the virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine can help safeguard individuals and manage the pandemic triggered by SARS-CoV-2. Mechanism of the Sputnik V Vaccine

The Sputnik V (Gam-COVID-Vac) uses two distinct adenoviral vectors to produce the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein gene: Adenovirus 26 (Ad26) and Adenovirus 5 (Ad5). Combining two different serotypes is a novel strategy that provides long-lasting protection while also strengthening the immune system reaction. The carrier viruses have been altered to no longer infect cells; instead, they enter cells, express the spike protein, and end. High sensitivity detected the expression of a few viral genes but at a significantly reduced level.

The vaccine-infected cells are ultimately killed by the immunity they were intended to trigger. Despite their inability to reproduce, the cells stimulate the immunity sensors to ensure a strong natural immune system. Here, recombinant adenoviruses (rAD) have been frequently utilized as vaccination vectors.

Efficacy of the Sputnik V Vaccine

The studies and evaluation of around 20 thousand people who received the two doses showed that the vaccine was 91.6% effective. After experimental testing in two phases, the Lancet journal reported worldwide peer-reviewed efficacy data.

As per the latest data for more than 38 lakh people in Russia who were vaccinated with two doses, the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine has an approximately 98% efficiency rate.

In addition, the Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates provided statistics on 81,000 people who received two doses of the vaccine. The report suggested a 97.8% efficacy in avoiding symptomatic COVID-19 infection and a 100% efficacy in avoiding severe COVID-19 infection. The Sputnik V Vaccine demonstrated excellent safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness in Phase 3 clinical studies.

The trial results were as follows:

  • In the trial, the vaccinated set of people produced a humoral immune reaction in 98% of cases and a cellular immune reaction in 100% of cases.
  • For the older population, the vaccine had a 91.8% effectiveness rate.
  • People produced virus neutralizing antibodies were 1.3 to 1.5 times greater than those seen in people cured from COVID-19 after vaccination.

Dosage and Schedule of the Sputnik V Vaccine

Several adults or people over the age of 18 have been given the Sputnik V vaccination, a two-dose schedule vaccine. After 21 days / 3 weeks from the first dosage, the second dose must be administered.

The remaining 25% of vaccinations can be obtained from the maker by private hospitals. According to the guidelines, private hospitals may charge up to INR 150 per dosage in service costs. The state government regulates these prices.

The highest selling price for every dose of Sputnik V Vaccine, including all taxes, is Rupees 995. The first dosage contains 0.5 ml rAD26 (recombinant adenovirus serotype 26 particles). In contrast, the second dose contains 0.5 ml rAD5. The vaccine rate for every dosage of the Sputnik V Vaccine in India should be around Rupees 1,145, including all the taxes.

Administration of the Sputnik V Vaccine

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the limited emergency usage of “The Sputnik V vaccine” in India in April 2021. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Limited (DRL), a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm, introduced Russia’s Sputnik-V vaccine, a two combination vector vaccine, in the country on 14 May 2021. Sputnik V is a unique vaccine that employs two distinct vectors to deliver both doses. The use of two distinct adenovirus vectors provides a more powerful immune system response. The two doses make this vaccine more effective against coronavirus mutations. Unlike other vaccinations, it has a storing temperature range of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. The vaccine doses may be preserved in a standard freezer.

Side Effects of the Sputnik V Vaccine

The Sputnik V vaccine has good safety outcomes and proved efficient against the novel coronavirus strains. The S Protein of SARS-CoV-2 elicited a specific immune response in all the participants.

Some people have reported no side effects, and everyone’s response to the vaccination is mostly favourable. It is normal if there are no negative side effects.
