MBBS is one of the most sought-after degrees in India. Every year lakhs of aspirants sit for the NEET exam to get into the MBBS program. The MBBS degree is the first step to achieving a medical degree. Therefore, it is a significant step for medical aspirants. However, this year, after the NEET exams, the counselling process has been delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the court cases against the NEET exam. This delay has caused panic and anxiety in students who have scored high marks in NEET and those who want to pursue the MBBS course. This article explores the mental state of aspirants because of the long wait for counselling.

The Reasons Behind the Delay of the Counselling

There are quite a few reasons for the delay in Medical Counselling. Listed below are some reasons why there is a setback in the counselling process after NEET results:

  1. Pandemic

One of the primary reasons for the delay in the counselling process is the pandemic. The pandemic has forced many colleges to delay their admission process due to set back in conducting final exams for the passing batch. Authorities of the NEET Exams have faced a delay in conducting the counselling process because of the lockdown caused due to the pandemic.

  1. Court Cases

There is an ongoing court case about the validity of the quota system in the NEET Exam. This case might have been one of the causes for the delay in the counselling system because the hearing of the case was on 7th January. In July 2021, the government announced that they were extending 27% OBC seats and 10% EWS reservations to all medical seats that come under the Central Pool. However, this was contested in the Supreme Court.

Although some candidates with high scores have already undergone the counselling process and have taken admission in colleges to study MBBS, many others have still not experienced the counselling process. Without sitting through the counselling process, no candidate can get admission into colleges to study MBBS. Moreover, some medical aspirants are worried that they might have to study with their juniors next year due to the exceptionally long wait for medical counselling.

Alternatives

Many students have decided to pursue their backup plan instead of going forward with MBBS or BDS. They took this decision because they were tired of waiting for the counselling sessions for the medical courses. They worried that if they waited too long, they might lose the chance to pursue their backup plan and, as a result, waste an entire year. Another factor that made them pursue their backup plan instead of a medical degree despite cracking NEET was that it might be difficult for them to get admission into any college with an influx of aspirants coming next year.

Concerns of the Students

Due to the delay in the counselling process, my concerns have risen among the students. Listed below are some concerns of the students about the delay in the counselling process:

  1. Some students have remarked that if the counselling process for the medical courses commences late, it will be a problem for them since they have to decide whether to pursue MBBS or their backup plan. Therefore, the delay in the counselling process will put them at crossroads.
  2. Another factor medical candidates are worried about is rushing through the MBBS syllabus in the first semester. Since the first semester lays the foundation for students to understand complicated concepts later, a delay in the counselling process will barely have any time to understand the syllabus which will consequently cause problems for students during their end-term exams and in future.
  3. NEET PG students are concerned about the delay in the counselling process because they have to pursue their postgraduation degree in the medical field to make a career in this area. Because there is a delay in the counselling process, their qualification remains MBBS without the MD or MS degree, which will make it difficult for them to get a job in the medical sector.

Concern of the Parents

Parents are equally concerned about their children’s future. Listed below are some concerns of the parents because of the delay in the counselling process:

  1. Parents are worried about their children’s careers. Due to the delay in the counselling process parents are concerned about whether they will be able to pursue their medical degrees.
  2. Therefore, parents are putting additional pressure on their children to pursue their backup plans or something other than a medical degree, even if they want to pursue their medical degree.

Conclusion

The counselling process is an integral part of the admission process. Hence, it is quite natural for the students wanting to pursue a medical degree to be anxious about the delay. However, the National Medical Commission has postponed the counselling for the All India Quota until the court case against the EWS All India and OBC Quota is cleared by the Supreme Court. As a result, they believe this move will help the toppers select more seats during the counselling process.
